The Udayas gate: crossing scales

A substantial stone façade surrounds an opening towards another space. Pause at the Udayas gate to read a threshold, then connect it to Rabat as a city of layers rather than an image of one era.

Before entering

Rabat’s historical layers include the Udayas kasbah, walls and Almohad remains alongside the planning of a modern capital. UNESCO considers these within one urban story rather than treating old and new as completely separate worlds.

The selected photograph shows the kasbah gateway. Stone and decoration step around the arch, while the opening appears darker than the surface around it. Before thinking about the destination, notice how the building stages a transition from outside to inside.

Gates with different voices

Compare it with Bab Bou Jeloud in Fez or Bab Mansour in Meknes. A shared arch form does not make them interchangeable: colour, scale, framing and the space beyond each gateway differ.

A circular wall crop can make gateways seem more alike. The image window therefore offers the whole photograph, restoring edges and surroundings and inviting attention beyond the most recognisable fragment.
